What is a Dental Implant?
A dental implant is a tiny titanium screw that replaces the root of a missing tooth. After it is surgically implanted into your jaw, it can provide a stable base for a tooth replacement such as a crown, bridge or denture.
Dental implants help prevent the teeth surrounding the gap from shifting. They also act as a new tooth root in the jaw.
By taking action to replace missing teeth you'll help keep your remaining teeth in their proper positions and prevent potential jaw pain and bite problems in the future.
Why Replace Missing Teeth?
If you lose a tooth, it's important to have it replaced to prevent the remaining teeth from shifting and creating issues with your bite or jaw alignment. The jawbone may also begin to deteriorate, resulting in facial collapse or negatively impacting your ability to eat and talk.
The Dental Implant Process
If you and your dentist decide a dental implant is right for you, the process will begin with your dentist surgically placing a titanium screw (which is the implant) into your jawbone below the gum line where the tooth is missing.
As the tissue around the implant heals, it will bond with the bone and attach to the gums. This usually takes anywhere from three to six months.
Once you've healed from your surgery, another appointment will be scheduled with your dentist. At this appointment, they will attach a tooth replacement option such as a crown, bridge or denture to the dental implant. These pieces, once combined, will look and function like a natural tooth.
